SILVERHEELS, Jay
(1912–1980)
   Born on the Six Nations Indian Reserve in Canada, Jay Silverheels, from the Mohawk tribe, is probably best known for his long-running role as Tonto, the Lone Ranger’s Native American sidekick in the long-running television series as well as in three films: The Legend of the Lone Ranger (1952), The Lone Ranger Rides Again (1955), and The Lone Ranger (1956). His horse was named Scout. But Silverheels had a long career in Western films beginning in 1940, mostly with uncredited Native American roles. Perhaps his best role was with Glenn Ford in Santee (1973).
